This project as my final project for my M.A. degree, driven by my lifelong fascination with monsters. The project primarily explores the hidden stories behind various movie Kaiju, aiming to uncover why humans have been creating monsters since ancient times. It also delves into the symbolic representations embodied by Kaiju and attempts to envision what Kaiju might have looked like in 2018. In pursuit of these goals, I drew inspiration from Susan Sontag's article, which explores the relationship between science fiction movies, society, and the enduring fascination with dinosaurs and monsters.
As a culmination of my research, I created a 15-minute film and an accompanying essay that reflect my findings. Additionally, I produced printed works that provide further support for my exploration of Kaiju research.
︎
The War of Millennium
I have titled this 15-minute film "The War of Millennium," drawing inspiration from a fascinating internet legend. According to this legend, a monumental conflict with extraterrestrial beings occurred in the year 2000, ingeniously crafted to deceive individuals born after that year into believing its authenticity.
The film, titled "The War of Millennium," takes place between 1999 and 2000, coinciding with the initial introduction of the internet to the general public. Building upon extensive research on fear and inspired by Douglas Adams' work, "How to Stop Worrying and Learn to Love the Internet," the film aims to showcase the audience's apprehensions and concerns about the internet. The Kaiju element serves as a metaphorical technique to symbolize humanity's collective fear of the internet. Through this approach, the film takes the form of a Kaiju documentary, providing a unique perspective on the subject matter.
︎Key Visuals
I utilized an abundance of Chinese characters, scanning them meticulously to preserve their authentic textual appearance. These Chinese characters symbolize different facets of fear and are presented in a visually impactful manner at the exhibition in the UK. The large-scale and high-contrast display of these characters evokes a profound sense of unease, effectively conveying the unsettling atmosphere surrounding the subject matter.
︎
To further accentuate the immersive nature of the "mockumentary" film, I have meticulously crafted additional elements that reinforce the film's concept. These include a meticulously curated compendium chronicling diverse kaiju data, an extensive array of DVD discs, and various other supplementary materials.
︎Kaiju Workshop
In order to collect more people’s concern and fear about the contemporary society, I decided to hold a workshop for the first year MA students. This workshop is kind of like a questionnaires for my Kaiju research to find to how people convert their fear to their own Kaiju.
︎Kaiju Workshop
After a productive afternoon workshop, I gained numerous intriguing insights, including people's fears and apprehensions towards various unfamiliar things. Surprisingly, these fears actually contributed to my ability to enhance the final outcome.

Shuffle is a versatile street light that combines various functionalities such as CCTV, WiFi, speakers, and more. To showcase the diverse capabilities of Shuffle, I created a miniature city using different elements from urban landscapes. In this micro city, each component represents a specific function of Shuffle. Just as a city is composed of various buildings and departments, Shuffle connects the people of the city, bringing together different aspects of urban life.

When one touches the surface of a wall, moving his hands freely, he leaves behind a trail. Although invisible by itself, through time, trails left by different people accumulate and leave behind signs. Then, people who arrive subsequently recognize and touch the same surface, realizing a connection between them and the predecessors that travels through time.

︎ ABSTRACT FORMS
In this project, we aim to explore the ephemeral connections that individuals feel when interacting with the same wall. Building upon the foundational experience, we want to delve into the sensations and emotions evoked in people who have engaged with the wall.
︎ ABSTRACT FORMS
The overall interaction will revolve around the concept of "different times, same location, and how individuals create connections through traces left by previous individuals on the wall.
To enhance the sense of connection among different users, we have designed two different modes for the interactive experience.
︎ IDLE MODE_Storytelling
The rectangular module will display the following information for a specific time period:
*Interaction time
*Total number of interactions
*Total traces created
The camera perspective will transition to a deep-level time matrix.
In this interface, the goal is to help users better understand the concepts of time and space within the experience.
After the camera rotates 360 degrees within the 3D time matrix, it willrandomly enter one of the rectangular modules to display the hidden information.
All traces carried by the wall module within a certain period of time will be displayed to the user in a scrolling format.
︎ INTERACTIVE MODE
In the interactive mode, the user can create random square traces on the wall by waving their hands.
In the top left corner of each trace, the specific time when the trace was made will be displayed. The traces will also be recorded in the system. When subsequent individuals enter the space, they can establish connections and resonate with the traces left by previous users on the wall.

After the experience, users can follow the guidance on the screen to enter the store

︎ Play Unstoppable
As the creative partner for the LEGO® Play Festival, we take the lead in designing the immersive experiences for the core venue, the "Legendary Stadium," Situated on the eastern lawn of Xintiandi Taikoo Li Central Park.
The "Legendary Stadium" attracts numerous families with its vibrant LEGO yellow exterior. Inside, it faithfully recreates the authentic process of football matches, paying homage to the 2023 Women's World Cup through innovative spatial designs and interactive experiences.
︎ Legendary Stadium
︎ Locker Room
The design of the Legendary Stadium draws inspiration from real football fields and match dynamics. Upon entering the venue, we guide children through a row of locker room, adorned with jerseys of five football players from the LEGO® Play Festival and nameplates built with LEGO bricks.
︎Waiting Area
Before entering the field, children have the option to wear the badges of the red or blue teams. They can engage in 1v1 battles or collaborate with teammates in 3v3 matches, aiming to achieve personal or team victories.
︎ Interactive Football Court
The central stadium features a ring of LED screens surrounding a real football turf. The LED screens randomly displaythe goalposts for both teams. Children score points by kicking the ball and hitting the opposing team's goal. After each goal, the positions of the goalposts change randomly, creating a fast-paced and exhilarating experience for everyone involved.
︎ Spectator Seats
We have also prepared spectator stands near the field for the parents. Additionally, we have scaled up the LEGO minifigures to provide enthusiastic support and cheer for the young players on the field.
︎ Moment of Glory
After the game, we have prepared a "Moment of Glory" for each participant. They will stand on the podium and hold a specially crafted LEGO brick trophy. The flashing lights on both sides will simulate the moment when the winning team goes up to receive their awards, creating an exciting and memorable experience.
︎ Jungle Adventure
Adventure always begins in the jungle! The jungle space and interactive elements are tailor-made for kids, simplifying interactions while keeping them fun. In this lifelike jungle setting, children will encounter various interactive points.
By simply tapping ground buttons, they can trigger the sound of a gorilla, a glowing daisy, a 270-degree rotating owl, or uncover a hidden bunny behind leaves.
